Discover Auberge Du Petit Mas

Tucked along 5 Av. du Dr Bienfait, 63500 Issoire, France, Auberge Du Petit Mas feels like the kind of place you hope to stumble upon while wandering through Auvergne. I first visited on a rainy autumn evening after a long drive through the Puy-de-Dôme countryside, and from the moment I stepped inside, the warm lighting and rustic décor set the tone for a genuinely comforting meal. The stone walls, wooden beams, and neatly dressed tables created an atmosphere that balanced tradition with quiet elegance.

The menu reflects classic French gastronomy with a regional twist. If you appreciate terroir-driven cuisine, you’ll notice how carefully local ingredients are selected. Auvergne is known for its cheeses-Saint-Nectaire, Cantal, and Bleu d’Auvergne-and they feature prominently across several dishes. During my visit, I ordered a duck breast served with a reduced red wine sauce and seasonal vegetables sourced from nearby farms. The flavors were layered yet clean, a hallmark of thoughtful preparation rather than overcomplication. According to France’s Ministry of Agriculture, the Auvergne region remains one of the country’s most respected agricultural zones, and restaurants that rely on regional sourcing often deliver higher freshness and traceability. That commitment was evident on the plate.

Service plays a huge role in shaping any dining experience, and here it felt personal without being intrusive. The staff walked me through the day’s specials, explaining cooking techniques and wine pairings in simple, accessible language. For anyone unfamiliar with traditional French preparations like confit or slow braising, they break it down clearly. Confit, for example, involves slow-cooking meat in its own fat at a low temperature, which preserves tenderness and intensifies flavor. It’s a method praised by culinary institutions such as Le Cordon Bleu for maintaining moisture while enhancing texture. At Auberge Du Petit Mas, that technique was applied beautifully to a pork dish I sampled on a second visit-crispy on the outside, meltingly soft inside.

The wine list deserves a mention as well. It focuses on French appellations, including bottles from Bordeaux, Burgundy, and the Rhône Valley, alongside regional selections. I appreciated that the team suggested a lesser-known Auvergne red that paired seamlessly with the duck. Thoughtful pairings like that elevate a meal from good to memorable. If you rely on customer reviews before choosing a restaurant, you’ll notice that many guests praise both the consistency of the cuisine and the attentiveness of the service. In my own experience, consistency is what builds trust, and this kitchen delivers it.

Portion sizes strike a comfortable balance. You leave satisfied but not overwhelmed. The dessert menu leans toward traditional French classics-think crème brûlée with a perfectly caramelized top or a delicate tarte aux pommes. I watched as the chef torched the sugar layer on a crème brûlée at a nearby table; the crack when the spoon tapped the surface was exactly what you want. Texture matters just as much as flavor, and here, both are handled with care.

Location-wise, being situated in Issoire makes it convenient whether you’re a local resident or a traveler exploring central France. The restaurant is easy to access, and parking nearby is manageable, though during peak dinner hours it can be slightly limited. Reservations are advisable, especially on weekends, as word of mouth and positive online reviews have made it a popular dining spot.

From a professional standpoint, having visited numerous bistros and country inns across France, I can say that what sets this place apart is its respect for culinary fundamentals. There’s no attempt to chase trends or reinvent French cuisine unnecessarily. Instead, the focus remains on well-executed classics, regional produce, and warm hospitality. That approach aligns with what many respected chefs advocate: mastery of technique first, creativity second.

While menus may change seasonally-and availability of certain ingredients can vary depending on supply-the core identity remains intact. If you’re searching for a restaurant in Issoire that combines authentic French cooking, a welcoming ambiance, and reliable service, Auberge Du Petit Mas stands out as a destination worth experiencing firsthand.

  • Just went to restaurant for meal. Very popular. Need to book. Nearer 7pm the quicker the food comes.

  • Large busy restaurant with rooms, serving regional specialities. Service was friendly but a little haphazard. We had a large room with comfortable bed. Downsides: we had to pay for room in advance and they still blocked a €200 security deposit on my currency card which they failed to release despite email requests, meaning that I had to wait for a week to get the blocked cash released. Breakfast poor and unimaginative.

  • We ate in the restaurant on a cold windy wet night. The place was so warm and inviting and the vegetarian pizza was the best I’ve ever had. Finished off with cafe gourmand! Perfect. A real gem. Staff were so lovely too. All in all a really great evening

  • We were hoping to have a quick lunch stop but this place is crazily popular. And since we were there on a Sunday, it took a long while to get served. The pricing is very reasonable, and they offer a fair choice of local fares as well as pizzas. Book ahead to avoid disappointment.

  • We loved everything about this boutique hotel! The room is decorated with lovely finishes that gives you a true “romance in the French countryside” feeling. Staff were super helpful eventhough we don’t speak a word of French. It is breath of fresh air compared to the bad attitude often experienced in Paris. They helped us with our luggage up the stairs (and we have a lot thanks to having a baby!). They warned us on e-mail that they do not have a bassinet available for baby so we could come prepared with a carry cot. The pizza was amazing and certainly hit all the right spots after a long day of travel. Unfortunately a tree fell on our car during the night with some rough winds. Damage was limited, but the staff did all they could to help us and make sure we could get on our way. Thank you so much - you have a lovely place and we would love to stay again should we ever pass Issoire in future

  • I had an excellent experience at l’Auberge du Petit Mas. The staff are incredibly friendly and welcoming, with great attention to detail that really makes you feel at home… The food is of outstanding quality, fresh, beautifully presented, absolutely delicious and … local! I highly recommend booking a table at the restaurant in advance, because it’s simply fantastic and not to be missed! Merci Rachelle, Cedric!

  • Good food in deep Auvergne ! Good local food With meat and cheese. Friendly waitresses and efficient service . On Thursdays you can enjoy the guinguette night ( so Frenchy)

  • Went in for lunch. Great menu with awesome value. Truffafes, charcuterie, but also pigs feet, grilled meat and pizzas. Had their planche Auvergne with pigs feet gratinée with St Nectaire, truffafes, prosciutto, green salad, and St. Nectaire was an amazing value and extremely good. Fresh red fruit tart which was strawberry that day was good but strawberries could have been fresher. Service was quick and pleasant. Would definitely go back.
